Hooray! California Pizza Kitchen is back at the Hillsdale Mall in San Mateo! We missed their family-friendly atmosphere during their renovation, but now they are open again! Don’t let the ongoing mall construction fool you – CPK is open and more awesome than ever. The decor is refreshed, the menu has new items added to the classics, and there is a Menu Adventure Guarantee that takes all of the anxiety out of trying new dishes.
We started with our new, all-time CPK favorite: spicy buffalo cauliflower. We shared a shrimp scampi pizza (so good we went back the next day for more), and The WCB, CPK’s burger that rivals the best customer burger shops. The West Coast Burger is a blend of Wagyu, chuck and brisket, with applewood smoked bacon, caramelized onions, lettuce, toms, pickles, and housemate sauce. It was amazing, especially with the side of crispy potatoes. It tasted exactly how a burger should taste.
That was enough to make our fully bellies happy, but we couldn’t resist the warm butter cake, which is the best dessert ever.
The shrimp scampi pizza felt like a little bit of a risk when we ordered it, especially because my husband wanted to stick to his favorite, the carnitas pizza. The shrimp scampi pizza has all of the flavor of shrimp scampi, just without the pasta, and the leftovers held up! It was really good served cold for lunch the next day.
Trying a new dish is risk-free at CPK because their Menu Adventure Guarantee says that if it doesn’t thrill you, they will replace the item with your regular favorite. This takes the stress out of trying new items, especially when convincing a kid to try something new. If that shrimp scampi pizza doesn’t work for you, we can always order your favorite plain cheese pizza instead. When traveling this summer, my son ordered something out of the ordinary at a restaurant, and seeing that he didn’t touch it much, our waiter rushed out with some chicken nuggets for him. That level of ease is what CPK promises, and it’s appreciated by me, a frequent second-guesser when it comes to ordering at restaurants.
