I haven’t been to the fair since my cousin was a kid. I happened to be watching her for a week during a family emergency. And it happened to be over fair week. This year, that same cousin is the Fair Manager of the Santa Clara County Fair. And I’ll be returning this year with my family to support my cousin… and to enjoy the laid-back life of the fair.
The fair has been in full swing since Thursday, but will still be going strong this weekend. There’s the traditional fair exhibits, like livestock and carnival rides. But there’s also a Demolition Derby (my nine year son may have just squee’d) and Wang Chung as the headliner band (my inner 80s child may have just squee’d). There’s also magic shows, sea lions, pro wrestling, wine tasting, and more!
I think it’s all time for us to reconnect with the fair. I remember going as a kid, eating a corn dog and a giant pickle, getting my face painted, and working up the courage to ride The Zipper. I want my kids to have a fun, real life experience with the fair. Where they can see that this valley used to grow real apples, not ones with a lowercase “i” instead.
The fair is open Saturday from Noon to 10pm and Sunday from Noon to 9pm. You can buy tickets at the door or online at www.thefair.org.
