San Mateo County Bag Ban: Put Reusable Bags in Your Car Now

625535_358528314251493_791156169_nWe knew a bag ban was coming long before the county supervisors voted late last year. Beginning Monday, in most of San Mateo County, retail stores can no longer provide plastic bags to customers (with some exceptions) and paper bags will cost 10 cents per bag. It’s reusable bag time, people!

With cities and counties outside of San Mateo already enacting their own single use bag bans, it’s no surprise this is moving into San Mateo County. The plastic bag exceptions include restaurants when bagging up take out or leftovers, and grocery stores for produce and meats. The entire ordinance can be found on the San Mateo County website. While not all towns that adopted the ban begin on Monday, most do. Others follow suit a few weeks later, on June 6. The towns that have adopted the ban are:

  • Belmont
  • Brisbane
  • Burlingame
  • Colma
  • Daly City
  • East Palo Alto
  • Foster City
  • Half Moon Bay
  • Menlo Park
  • Pacifica
  • Portola Valley
  • Redwood City
  • San Bruno
  • San Carlos
  • San Mateo
  • South San Francisco

The dates are confusing, but the goal is not. Just start relying on reusable bags now everywhere to avoid worrying about which towns begin Monday and which begin later.

To help spread the word, the San Mateo County Health System’s Facebook page is offering two free reusable bags like the one pictured for anyone sharing a post about the ban. The comments are worth a read, too, with at least one person asserting that people will die from the bag ban.
