Even bigger than the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival is Mavericks, the invitation only surf contest featuring the world’s top surfers and massive waves. It’s happening this Sunday and it’s not to be missed for anyone with an interest in surfing.
You’ll want to get there early, not only to get a spot, but because the event begins at 8 a.m. Kelly Slater will be surfing in the first heat, too. However, if you’re worried about the crowds, there will be a live webcast beginning at 7:30 a.m. on the Mavericks Invitational website.
People are not allowed on the beach, and as the event grows more popular, more areas get closed off, mainly for environmental protection.
The event includes a festival, the Half Moon Bay viewing party, with tickets for $10 (kids under five are free), and parking for an additional $15, which benefits the locals Boys & Girls Club. There will be jumbo screens showing live action, music, festivities, and food to purchase. There will be an awards show at the end of the day with time for autographs.
