It was 8:30 am. My daughter, in preschool at the time, stood solemnly in front of the school flag with her tiny hand over her heart for the Pledge of Allegiance. When it was over, she looked at me with big eyes and said very seriously: “Mom, my heart only beats during the Pledge of Allegiance.”
“What?” I asked. She explained patiently as she demonstrated “when I look at the flag and put my hand over my heart, it is beating. But when I put my hand down, my heart stops beating. It’s like that every day.”
I explained to my wee patriot that her heart is always beating and that her hand pressing on her chest just helped her feel the beating more easily.
“What?????” She was floored. “You mean it’s ALWAYS beating? How does it DO that?!”
Indeed, if I think about this fact too hard, it is a little unsettling. But I re-confirmed this shocking news, and she immediately grasped what we adults sometimes forget: our hearts are truly amazing, worthy of much wonder and awe.
Leave it to a four year old to point this out.
So I am thankful to Inspired Woman for putting together this great list of videos, articles and tips to help us appreciate our hearts and take extra good care of them for American Heart Month and always.
