What’s Going on in Silicon Valley for the Jan. 20 Weekend

Make new toys at the Exploratorium’s Open MAKE event! The event features a Q&A with toymakers about their work and process, and multiple opportunities for kids to dissect toys, and create their own. The Open MAKE event is Jan. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is included with admission to the Exploratorium.
Anchors Aweigh Floating Boat! Preschoolers can craft their own boat and see if it floats from 11 a.m. to 3:00pm on Saturday, Jan 21 at Lakeshore Learning in San Jose.
The U.S. Figure Skating Championship is coming to San Jose! The competition runs between Jan. 22  and Jan. 29 at HP Pavilion, with tickets still available via Ticketmaster.  See some of the current skating stars perform up close!
The teen Battle of the Bands is underway! Teen bands can enter the Battle of the Bands, using library equipment to record a music video for free at the Edenvale Branch of the San Jose Public Library.  Recording starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday, January 25. Teens ages 12-18 can join in on all the fun and participate in the competition for a chance to perform at a live concert in March with the grand prize winning band receiving $250.
