I haven’t read the book or seen the movie.Like a high school student with my cliff notes, I searched the internet and am now quite knowledgeable about this story of a mom of two trying to keep it all together. I have also seen the previews on TV. And then there’s the fact that I AM a mom of two trying to keep it all together.
So actually I’m an expert. At least in the “trying” part.
Last week I showed my daughter how to put on her soccer socks by putting my hand all the way to the end, crunching it up and pulling it on in one fell swoop. She looked up at me and said “Mom, you are the master of tricks.” Ain’t that the truth.
But my latest trick was to hide a little gift that I was saving for her birthday so she wouldn’t find it. A great trick, only now I can’t find it. But maybe when I find it my extra set of car keys will be there too. Mildly alarming. I will focus on other tricks.
I have been asked “how do you do it all?” In the words of the semi-famous 80′s rock band Styx, welcome to the grand illusion. It’s magic. That duck swimming across the pond might look serene, but underneath the water its little webbed feet are paddling like crazy. Admittedly, I never looked serene on top to begin with.
Magic notwithstanding, I DO sometimes wonder how we get it all done. And for pete’s sake, WHY?? A productive day is satisfying, but I’d gladly trade it for a day on the dock this summer with a glass of wine at a lake where my cell phone didn’t work.
For the days you do need to get it all done, here’s a great list of blog posts, tips, lists, jokes and ideas about “How We Do It.” (My favorite is the How Not to Hurry post):
